  • A new-release checker for people who keep their own music collection instead of streaming

People who buy and keep their own music, rather than streaming it, miss out on the 'new from artists you like' alerts that streaming apps give everyone else. Someone in that position wished for an app that looks through the music folders on their own computer, works out which artists they have, and when asked shows any new albums or singles from those artists. They know online services exist, but wanted something that works from their own music folders and checks only when they ask. It could check a free public music database such as MusicBrainz and remember what it has already shown you.

Asked for by a music fan on the fediverse who doesn't use streaming

  • A map where parents share free public spots for little kids to watch diggers and cement mixers

Lots of little kids are obsessed with diggers, cranes and cement mixers, and watching real ones at work is a free outing they love. After someone shared a street in New York where you can see a row of cement mixers, another person wished there were an app for finding free, public places like that. Parents could drop a pin on a spot they can watch from the pavement or a public viewing area, say what's usually there and roughly when it's busy, and mark when they last saw it working. Building sites come and go, so each spot should show how recent its last report is.

  • A way to tap one article in a newspaper PDF and read just that column on your phone

Reading a newspaper or magazine PDF on a phone means endless zooming and sliding sideways, because the pages have several columns that change from page to page. Someone who reads a daily paper this way wished they could tap the one article they want and have just that column's text laid out to fit the phone screen, in a comfortable size. The reader apps they tried either confused them or jumbled the text across columns. It would only need to work for PDFs that contain real text, not scanned photos of pages.

  • A shared rating of which food jars and tubs are easy to clean out and reuse

People who wash out jam jars and food tubs to reuse them find that some brands' labels peel off cleanly while others tear and leave sticky glue behind, and some products come in far more plastic than others. This would be a simple shared list where you look up a product and see how easy its container is to reuse, then add your own rating after trying it: did the label come off, is the lid worth keeping, how much extra packaging was there. Next time you shop, you could pick the brand with the friendlier jar. Products could be found by name or by scanning the barcode, using the free Open Food Facts product list.

  • A helper that does the subsidy paperwork for small home daycares

Many families pay for childcare with help from a state subsidy program. But for the small, home-based daycares that care for a lot of these kids, the paperwork is miserable. Providers have to track attendance, fill out state forms, submit billing through clunky government portals, and chase down payments when something gets rejected. Some providers just stop accepting subsidized families because it isn’t worth the hassle. That means fewer spots for the families who need them most. I wish there were a simple tool a home daycare owner could use on their phone. They’d check kids in and out each day, and it would take care of the rest: fill out the state’s billing forms, flag anything missing before it gets rejected, and explain in plain English what to fix when something goes wrong. It doesn’t need to cover every state at first. Starting with one state and doing it really well would already help a lot of people. A bigger version could also help someone get licensed to open a home daycare in the first place, since the licensing process scares a lot of people away. More licensed providers means more open childcare spots. What would make it great: Works on a phone, since providers are busy with kids all day Uses plain language, not government jargon Catches mistakes before submission, so payments aren’t delayed Free or very cheap for small providers

  • A syllable-pair explorer for kids learning Chinese pinyin that lists the words each pair makes

Young Chinese learners could use a toy where they pick two pinyin syllables and see every word those syllables can form, with tones, meanings and pictures. A switch would let the child search with or without tones, since in films the tones are often hard to hear. It could be built on a free, open Chinese dictionary as a simple website, helping kids look up words they hear in subtitled videos.

  • A phone app that reads the numbers off a basic bathroom scale and saves them for you

Some bathroom scales flash weight, BMI and body-fat readings on a small screen one at a time, so copying them into a spreadsheet by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. A simple phone app could watch the scale's screen through the camera for one full round, read each number, and save them in the same order every time. It could then copy them straight into a spreadsheet, and get better at reading different scale models over time. It would only copy the readings down, without interpreting them or giving medical advice.

  • A tracker for which registrar holds each of your domains and where its DNS points

  • A simple dashboard of red and green lights for everything you run

  • A hex editor with fuzzy field-aware search for binary file formats
