Terms of Use
Last updated: October 17, 2026
1. Who we are
Somebody Build This (somebodybuildthis.dev) is a personal side project run by Troy Karraker, not a company. "We" and "us" in these terms means Troy Karraker. You can reach us at hello@somebodybuildthis.dev or through the feedback page at somebodybuildthis.dev/feedback.
By using the site you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
2. Who can use it
You must be at least 13 years old to create an account, or at least 16 if you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom.
You can browse without an account. To post ideas, mark interest, start or ship builds, or report content, you need to sign in with an email link or with GitHub.
3. Your account
- Keep access to your email and GitHub account secure. Anyone who can open your sign-in emails can sign in as you.
- Your public name is your handle. We never show your email address publicly. You can change your handle once every 30 days; old handles stay reserved for you and redirect to your profile.
- Don't pick a handle that impersonates someone else or is offensive. We may change or reserve handles that do.
- One person, one account for normal use. Don't create accounts to inflate interest counts, pose as other people, or get around a limit or a moderation decision.
4. Ideas are given freely
This is the core of the site, so please read it.
When you post an idea, you agree that anyone may build it. Anyone, including people who never sign up here, may build software or anything else based on your idea, change it, combine it with other ideas, and keep, sell, license or otherwise commercialize what they make. They owe you nothing: no payment, royalty, credit or permission. Builders who ship here are linked to your idea in the gallery, but that link is a courtesy of the site, not an obligation on builders.
What you are and aren't giving. Concepts and ideas generally can't be owned, so this mostly confirms what's already true. To be clear about the words you write:
- You keep the copyright in the text you post (your title and description).
- You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, display, copy, format and share that text on the site and in things that point to it (search results, link previews, share images, and posts about the site), for as long as it's on the site and for a reasonable time after you remove it (for example, cached copies and backups).
- You also give everyone a permission to read, quote and use your text as a description or specification when building and describing what they build (for example, quoting your idea in a README).
- You promise not to bring any claim (for example, over trade secrets, confidentiality or "I had that idea first") against anyone for building or commercializing something based on an idea you posted here.
So don't post anything you want to keep. Don't post confidential information, trade secrets, an employer's or client's ideas, or anything you plan to patent or sell. Posting it publicly can affect your ability to protect it later. We can't make an idea private again once others have seen it.
Builds belong to builders. What you build is yours. Posting a build here (its link, a one-line description, and an optional screenshot) gives us the same kind of license to display those on the site and in link previews and share images. You aren't giving us any rights in the thing you built.
5. Ideas we post from elsewhere
Some ideas on the board are posted by our curator account and are marked "found elsewhere" (or "AI-suggested"). Found-elsewhere ideas are short paraphrases, in our own words, of wishes people expressed in public posts on other sites. We link to the original public post and credit it by role only (for example, "a teacher on a teaching forum"), never by username. We don't copy the original post.
If you recognize your own post and want the idea taken down or the credit changed, tell us on the feedback page or at hello@somebodybuildthis.dev and we'll remove or change it.
6. What you can post
You're responsible for what you post: ideas, build links, blurbs, screenshots, reports and feedback. Only post things you have the right to post.
Don't post, link to or use the site for:
- Spam, advertising disguised as an idea, link farming, or repeated duplicate posts.
- Anything illegal, or ideas whose main purpose is to break the law or harm people.
- Harassment, threats, hate, or content that targets a person or group.
- Other people's personal information (doxxing), or ideas built around tracking, surveilling or scraping specific people without their consent.
- Sexual content, content involving minors in any sexual way, or graphic violence.
- Malware, phishing, scams, or links to software that does something other than what it says.
- Content that infringes someone else's copyright, trademark or other rights, including screenshots you don't have the right to use.
- Impersonating a person or organization, or misleading people about who made a build.
- Things that aren't ideas or builds (off-topic posts).
Ideas near sensitive areas (health, legal, money) are fine as ideas, but builders are responsible for building them safely and lawfully.
7. Don't break the site
Don't:
- Try to get around bot checks, rate limits, or moderation (including with new accounts).
- Automate posting, interest marks or reports, or scrape the site in a way that burdens it.
- Probe for or exploit security weaknesses, access other people's accounts, or interfere with the site's operation. If you find a security problem, please tell us privately at hello@somebodybuildthis.dev.
We use rate limits on sign-in, and bot detection on some posting and account forms. If a check wrongly blocks you, reload and try again, or tell us.
8. Moderation
Anyone signed in can report an idea or build. Reports are seen only by the site's admins.
We may hide any idea or build that breaks these terms or that we reasonably think is spam, abusive or off-topic. Hiding is reversible: hidden content stays in our database and is no longer shown publicly. We may also limit or suspend accounts that repeatedly or seriously break the rules. We'll try to be fair and consistent, but we decide what stays up, and we don't owe anyone a place on the board.
You can edit your ideas and withdraw your own ideas and builds from public view yourself. Withdrawn content is hidden, not erased, so it can be restored; ask us if you want it permanently deleted.
If you think we got a moderation decision wrong, tell us on the feedback page.
9. Deleting your account
You can delete your account in Settings, or ask us: send a request through the feedback page while signed in, or email hello@somebodybuildthis.dev from the address on your account. If you ask us, we'll confirm it's you first. Deleting your account deletes your account and the content linked to it as described in the Privacy Policy. Your handle stays reserved so nobody can impersonate you.
Deleting your account removes your ideas from public view, but it doesn't take back the freedom to build them: anyone who built, or builds, from an idea you posted keeps that freedom. If other people have built on one of your ideas, it is withdrawn from public view and detached from you (it is not erased), so their builds stay intact.
10. Links to other sites
Builds and found-elsewhere ideas link to other websites. We don't control them, don't check them beyond basic moderation, and aren't responsible for them. Use your judgment before visiting a link or using someone's build.
11. No warranty
The site is free and run by one person in spare time. It's provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don't promise it will be available, error-free or secure, that content will be kept, or that anyone will build your idea. Ideas, builds and other content come from users, not from us, and we don't endorse them.
12. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the site or anyone's use of an idea posted here. Our total liability for any claim about the site is limited to USD $50. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you; nothing here limits rights you have that can't be waived by law.
You agree to cover reasonable losses we suffer because content you posted broke these terms or the law.
13. Changes and ending
We may change these terms. If a change matters, we'll update the date at the top and say so on the site before it takes effect. Using the site after that means you accept the new terms.
We may change, pause or shut down the site at any time. If we plan to shut it down, we'll try to give notice so people can save what they need. You can stop using the site at any time.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the courts in King County, Washington, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts.
15. Copyright complaints
If you think something on the site infringes your copyright, send hello@somebodybuildthis.dev the content's link, what work you think it infringes, and how to reach you. We'll review it and hide it if appropriate.
