A crowdsourced aisle map of where items live in big warehouse stores

Asked for by a shopper on r/AppIdeas · original source · more from r/AppIdeas

Warehouse stores rarely post aisle signs for products, so shoppers wander. Let people search an item and see the aisle and bay for their store, with community edits and recent-confirmation dates. Starts with a single chain and a map of the floor.

The weekend plan

A rough weekend-sized plan to help you start. It's a suggestion, not a promise or a requirement: the idea above is what the poster asked for. Change anything. About the steward

Done for one weekend
For one store, shoppers search an item and see its aisle and bay, add items they find, and confirm that a location is still right.
Suggested shape
Phone-first web app with a small shared database
In scope
  • Start with one store: a list of its aisles and bays, and a plain drawing of the floor.
  • Search an item by name and see its aisle and bay, plus when someone last confirmed it.
  • Anyone can add an item's location, tap "still here" to confirm one, or report that it moved.
  • Show older locations as less certain, since stores move things around.
  • Keep it clearly unofficial: no store logos, and say it isn't affiliated with the chain. Anyone can edit, so keep a simple way to undo bad edits.
Optional, if there's time
  • More stores of the same chain, chosen by location.
  • Highlight the aisle on the floor drawing.
