A picture-story writing game for kids that lights up each picture once they've named it

Asked for by a poster on Software Recommendations Stack Exchange · original source · more from Software Recommendations

Children aged about 7 to 9 would see a small row of pictures and write a few sentences that use all of them. As they type, each picture lights up when they use its word, so they can see what they still need to describe, and if they're stuck, tapping a picture shows or says the word. When every row is done, the pieces join into one story the child can read back or hear read aloud, then turn the page for a new set. A parent or teacher would choose the pictures and their words, and it would need no accounts or chat.

The weekend plan

A rough weekend-sized plan to help you start. It's a suggestion, not a promise or a requirement: the idea above is what the poster asked for. Change anything. About the steward

Done for one weekend
A parent sets up rows of pictures and their words; a child writes sentences that use them, each picture lights up once its word is used, and the rows join into one story read aloud.

In scope
  • A parent or teacher sets up a story: rows of a few pictures, each with its word. Use their own photos or drawings, emoji, or images you have the rights to use.
  • The child types sentences under each row, and a picture lights up when its word appears, allowing simple forms like plurals (dog, dogs).
  • Tapping a picture shows its word, and says it aloud only with a speech voice that runs on the device (in the browser, a voice whose localService is true). Some browser voices send text to an online service, so with no on-device voice, stay text-only.
  • When every row is done, join the sentences into one story to read back, or hear aloud with an on-device voice, then turn to a new page of pictures.
  • No accounts, chat or ads, and nothing the child types leaves the device.
Optional, if there's time
  • Several saved picture sets to choose from.
  • Print the finished story.
